Portocolom - A little piece of paradise!
Porto Colom is one of the quieter resorts on the island. Once a thriving fishing village, this beautiful place has kept its charm whilst sharing the summer months with visitors from afar. A little further along the road is Cala Marçal with its white sandy beach and almost tropical turquoise blue waters, this beach is ideal for families of all ages. There is a wooden walkway onto the beach making it accessible for buggys and wheelchairs. The area boasts a large number of small beaches, restaurants and bars. Cala d´Or is 20 minutes away by car, or 30 minutes by bike. Cala d´Or is a larger resort, much busier in the summer, but still the most popular resort on the east coast, for those who enjoy a more lively holiday. It is one of the natural ports in the south of Mallorca. It occupies an urban area of ??78.4 ha. According to P. Xamena, during the Muslim domination, Catalan merchants already gave it the name of Portocolom, which probably came from Roman times and was due to the great abundance of pigeons that were raised there. Its history is marked above all by Serraïna piracy. This led to the creation of watchtowers (14th century) and already in the 16th century a watchtower was built at the entrance to the port. In 1713 the Cala Barbacana battery was built. At the end of the 18th century, in view of the great commercial activity, the first port and urban infrastructures were created; in 1854 the Customs building was inaugurated. During the last third of the 19th century, In the 19th century, the wine trade reached its peak and infrastructure improved, but commercial activity was drastically suspended due to the phylloxera crisis. It was not until 1947 and 1960 that trade was resumed. Alongside commercial activity, there was always fishing activity, which increased in 1908 with the introduction of trawlers. In 1876, the project to urbanise the area around the Chapel was approved, and thus the first urban nucleus was formed around the oratory, which had existed since 1808. In 1880, the area around the Customs House was urbanised, which was born as a summer resort. In the period from 1884 to 1887, the parish church of the Virgen del Carmen was built, where the small oratory was located, according to the project of Pedro de Alcántara Peña. In 1935, a public school was opened. From 1960 onwards, with the arrival of tourism, the urbanisations of sa Batería, Cala Barbacana, Cala Marçal, la Punta, Lafe and Cas Corso took place. Portocolom's characteristic features are three types of construction: houses with a box on the first floor (Pesqueros, Levante and de la Mar streets), boathouses or barracks (in the area of ??the stream, la Capilla and sa Bassa Nova), and the lighthouse (located at the entrance to the port by sea, in the area of ??la Punta).
